BHOPAL

The name of the Indian city Bhopal has become synonymous with the term gas leak. For it was 31 years ago almost to the day that the deadly gas leak occurred from the Union Carbide plant in Bhopal, India killing over 2,000 people while they slept. Total death toll was about 16,000 with over 500,000 injured. The gas leak was the worst industrial accident in history. DPI is fortunate to present this essay contributed by Devendra Dube on a demonstration in Bhopal in remembrance of the tragedy on the night of December 2-3, 1984. The demonstration is known as the “Toxic Baby Demonstration” and is directed against corporations who follow unsafe practices which could endanger the lives of the local people. Read more…
