Most of us are fortunate not to live anywhere along the “Ring of Fire”. This refers to the earthquake zone surrounding the Pacific Ocean. Perhaps thoughts of earthquake victims turn to Japan, Indonesia or Chile, but Ecuador has also suffered greatly.

DPI has recently acquired an important image of the scene in Ambato, Ecuador, that we call “Earthquake Survivor“, taken on August 5, 1949 following a 6.8 magnitude earthquake. The portrait of one of the lucky survivors is striking, but other people are seen gathering in the street to avoid being killed or injured from collapsing buildings as shown in the rear of the photo.
