I had the opportunity to be in Fayetteville in the summer of 1968. I said be, not visit. This was during the time of my military service, and Fayetteville is just down the road apiece from Ft. Bragg. The Market House is the focus of the town. It lies at a crossroads, but for me I was only concerned with Hay Street, which lies to the left of this blog image from the Market House and is opposed to the right by Person Street.
Sometimes we see a photo that looks like a painting. So it is with “A Game of Checkers“, North Carolina c.1936. All of the elements in the composition and the lighting call to mind paintings by Norman Rockwell.
There are times when an image just comes together. You know it when you see it. The Water Fountain at the Henderson County Courthouse conveys more information than a man simply taking a drink from a water fountain. There are multiple points of interest in the photo as the eye is unconsciously drawn into the photo in order to fully comprehend the scene in front of the courthouse.
